How candles burn:

A candle burns when the wick is lit and the surrounding wax melts and is drawn up to the flame. The heat of the flame vaporizes the wax (wax vapor burns blue in color). The vaporizing wax continues to cool the exposed wick and protects the wick while it burns.

Soot is a by-product of burning.

Here are ways to reduce soot while enjoying candles:

1. Keep candle wicks trimmed to 1/8 of an inch.

2. Choose 100% soy wax candles.

KISS Candles 100% soy wax has low soot emissions.

3. Choose dye-free candles.
Some candle dyes can be harmful to breathe when burning, such as aniline-based candle dyes.

Kiss Candles are dye-free.

4. Reduce fragrance.

KISS Candles’ essential oil fragrances are derived from plants and are naturally strong requiring less fragrance to produce the same strong scent throw.

5. Keep candles away from drafts
(drafts cause candle flames to burn unevenly, producing more soot).

6. Use a wick trimmer when extinguishing candle flame
(be sure that you are careful when doing so).

KISS Candles are produced using only 100% cotton wicks.

What you should know about candles with lead core wicks:

Lead core wicks have been banned for use in candle-making since October 2003 by the Consumer Products Safety Commission due to health risks.
A simple test: scratch a new, unburned wick tip on a white blank sheet of paper. If it makes a mark, the wick has lead.
